[ATTENTION NEEDED] Vote NO on HB 269

Dear [elected official],

I’m writing to ask you to vote NO on HB 269. It represents unnecessary government interference in decisions that should be left to Utah’s colleges, students, and families.

HB 269 would force public colleges and universities to assign dormitory housing without respecting a student’s gender identity unless they meet invasive and burdensome criteria. Utah’s colleges already have effective processes to address housing requests, making this legislation redundant and harmful.

I am a cis-gendered woman in my 50’s, and I am friends with several trans women. I have even spent the night at a conference with one of them. I felt no less safe with her than I did the other women attending the conference. Being transgender doesn’t make someone a predator or a danger to women any more than being a man makes you a predator or a danger to women. As far as privacy is concerned, transgender women are no less concerned about protecting the privacy of women. They simply want the same protection of privacy for themselves as afforded to other women. 

Protecting my rights means protecting trans rights today. When we defend the freedoms of one group, we safeguard the freedoms of everyone. I urge you to reject HB 269 and focus on protecting personal liberties while trusting Utah’s institutions to manage these issues effectively.

Vote NO on HB 267

As one of your constituents, I am urging you to vote NO against H.B. 267 Public Sector Labor Union Amendments. If passed this bill will harm public educators, firefighters, police officers, and other government workers. 

As a mother of a high school student and grandmother of 3 students attending public schools in Utah, I’m especially concerned for our students in the public school system. By limiting unions collective bargaining rights the legislature would stop public educators as they advocate for fair wages and safe, productive learning environments for Utah students. It will also expand the already disastrous teaching shortage in the state. The passing of this bill will dissuade young people from pursuing a career in public education and dissuade talented out of state educators from moving to Utah.

Public educators do one of the hardest jobs as they prepare the young generation to be the next leaders of this state. The legislature should be supporting and uplifting teachers instead of silencing their voices and weakening their unions.

You as a representative should also be considering the effects this bill will have on the public school students in your district. Young students deserve teachers who will help them grow and advocate for the best learning environments possible. Voting yes on this bill will show students that you don’t want them to succeed.

Please consider the long-term impact this bill would have on the hardworking public employees in our state and vote NO on H.B. 267. Your vote is crucial in ensuring that the rights of workers are protected and that they are not unfairly targeted by legislation that seeks to undermine their ability to engage in political and labor activities.
